|Willow Tree began as the women’s department in the basement of Chelsea, where it was known as the Emerald Room. When we opened our freestanding store at the corner of Biddle and Elm in 1968, it was because we had grown the business to the point that we needed more space. Willow Tree was an instant success, and served as the flagship store of the chain of stores that we strategically placed throughout the Metro Detroit area in the 1970s and 1980s, reaching a peak of 16 before times changed and we gradually shed all of those stores to focus on what had always been the mainstay of our womenswear business.
We opened it for the clientele we had at The Emerald Room, but it rapidly became a huge hit with younger women. Today, Willow Tree caters to a broad age range, very successfully recycling the generational transitions could let the store grow older with its customers without the determination to stay as we are. We strive to stay current with the middle range of women – not too trendy, but absolutely right on trend with each new season. An Attitude, not an Age!
Over forty years of womenswear retailing! We’ve sold quite a few items over that time, and continue to love reading the tea leaves for our wonderful customers. It’s still fun and exciting and energizing after all this time, in large part because of the level of support we enjoy from our friends!
